Congratulations to Maureen Davey on being awarded the Motorcycling Western Australia Women's 2017 Most Outstanding Woman Involved in the Sport award at the Shannons Insurance Night of Champions.
Maureen was nominated by the Historic Competition Motor Cycle Club of WA and the gratitude and praise about Maureen made her the outstanding choice to be this year's recipient of "MWA's Most Outstanding Woman Involved in the Sport" among a group of women that have been nominated by their club for their hard work behind the scenes in our sport.
Without dedicated women such as these, and as with every volunteer in our sport, events would be impossible to get off the ground let alone run successfully.
The grateful club member who nominated Maureen said "I walked into the HCMCWA club rooms to attend my first general meeting as a new member, I was instantly made welcome and part of the Club by the friendly greeting from Maureen Davey, who introduced me to other members, asked about my race bike and who to talk to about getting started on the track.
Maureen always has a warm welcome for all new members, riders, volunteers, officials and guests who attend a Club event. She ensures everyone feels they belong to the HCMC family.
Maureen has been a vital part of HCMCWA for 17 years. She works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that Club events are successful and enjoyable for all."
Tasks Maureen undertakes include:
Coordinating, recruiting and encouraging the Club’s race day volunteers as well as ensuring they all receive wet-weather gear, drinks, lunches and petrol money. The care and respect Maureen gives to our volunteers and officials means that they are willing to return to stand out in the sun, rain and wind to ensure rider safety.
She orders generators, radios, and liaises with the track manager to ensure medical personnel are on board for the meetings, and informs the local hospital about the events.
Assisting in preparations for tuning and race days including setting up and packing down
Keeping an eye on all riders to make sure we are safe in the pits and on the track
Organises Club raffles and assists with other fundraising activities
Ensures that trophies and medallions are ready for end of race day presentations
Preparing refreshments for Club meetings (and being bar manager at our old club rooms)
Assists and supports Bob Humphreys, current Club President. Before Bob retired from racing Maureen was also a key part of Bob’s pit crew whilst also doing all her other race day tasks.
Maureen's body of work undertaken for the benefit the Club could only be rivaled by President-Bob Humphreys , and that is saying something. She does all this as a club volunteer (essentially Bob’s unofficial secretary) and literally spends hours per day arranging and sorting things for the Club, then along with Bob is first to arrive and last to leave Club events.
The most amazing aspect of Maureen’s commitment to HCMCWA and historic racing is that she doesn’t ride herself, but understands why we all love the sport.
On Maureen's return from a well deserved break she said of her award "I was so excited to be the recipient of Motorcycling WA Women's award. Thank you to Motorcycling WA for choosing me when there are so many other deserving women who work hard for motorcycle sport.
I was away in New Zealand, and couldn't attend the Awards Night, so imagine my surprise and delight when upon opening Facebook the next day and finding out that I had been selected for this prestigious award, being recognised is a real honour,
I have been volunteering and working for a great club like the HCMC since the year 2000. Starting off in the canteen at Barbagallo Raceway, and then proceeding to be Volunteer co-ordinator... also assisting with the race day set up ensuring that all components are in place for a successful meeting. I get so much pleasure from helping the guys and gals get out on the track, they are so appreciative for everything I do.
I would like to thank everyone who was involved in nominating me for this award, and especially to Motorcycling WA Women's committee for selecting me."
